Last year was an important one for global health. On 25 Sep 2015, the UN General Assembly announced the new agenda for sustainable development between now and 2030. Effective from Jan 1, seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will supersede the previous Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in place since 2000.
Some members of the health community were surprised that only one of the seventeen SDG goals dealt with health, unlike the MDGs, which devoted three of their eight goals to health.
One journalist questioned why the SDGs were needed at all. “Given that the MDGs have been not been achieved in all countries, why not simply continue with the MDGs, and better still, raise the bar to set higher targets for the others?” Write a commentary for a health policy journal to address this change from MDGs to SDGs, indicating your support or otherwise with reasoned justification.
