What experiences have you encountered in America with family members or strangers whose native language is not English?

In the last couple of weeks, we have explored the complexities of language use in our culture. We have examined how the words we choose affect our perceived meaning and how others use language to complicate the truth. Our readings and discussions have also investigated how society might view those who speak a different language or have an accent and the struggles multi-lingual people face with their public and private languages. It is your job now to further explore one of these topics on your own.

Prompts:In Myriam Marquezs Why and When We Speak Spanish in Public and Amy Tans Mother Tongue we learn a little about what it is like to speak a language other than English in America. Both authors explain that their first language is something that is spoken with their parents, and that it is not necessarily essential for their parents to learn Proper English. Do you agree with this assertion? Do you feel people living in America for an extended time should learn English- why or why not? What experiences have you encountered in America with family members or strangers whose native language is not English? Do you feel that this impedes their life in this country?
