Part 1: Find one form of advertising for a product or service that you find personally offensive, but possibly a reflection of U.S. social or cultural values.  This can be something in print from a magazine or something you can find an online picture of or link to (i.e. many ads not shown in all U.S. markets can be found on YouTube).  Write a minimum of one FULL double-spaced page typed analysis, discussing what disturbs you about the ad, and what you might find representative of offensive stereotyping, sexism, racism, ageism, materialism, or any other undesirable social aspect of U.S. society.  For print ads, attach a color copy of the ad.  For video versions of ads, type in the exact link so I can easily find the video online.  If I try the link and it does not work, you will not receive credit for that part of the assignment. Try to make it 1.5-2 pages

 

Part 2: You must show the class orally what you have found and explain why you believe your example is offensive and why. So, I need a small document for explanations of the ad in very easy words.

Individual Assignment #2: International Advertising Comparison

 

Part 1: In this assignment, you should find two forms of advertising from two completely different countries outside of the U.S.  They should reflect two very different sets of values you believe are significantly different from the U.S.  For example, India and Middle Eastern countries sometimes represent more sexually subdued forms of advertising—even more than the U.S. perhaps.  Other countries, in contrast, may reflect far more open attitudes toward sexual context than those countries, as well as the U.S.—i.e. France or Italy, for example.  Write a minimum of one FULL double-spaced page typed analysis of these two ads.  Discuss what you believe each reflects about each country, as well as how the two countries differ from each other AND how each differs from the U.S.  Attach copy of print ad or link to the video representation. Try to make it 1.5-2 pages
