TEXT: MLA HANDBOOK (7TH EDITION);
Before you begin to write a research paper, you must conduct in-depth research. I am requiring a minimum of ten sources which must be cited within your paper. A bibliography is required whenever you quote or paraphrase sources within your writing. In MLA writing, a bibliography is called “Works Cited.” Your works cited page must come at the end of your paper, and be numbered as the last page of your essay.
Please read pages 3-50 in your handbook for guidance on how to conduct research and what sources are acceptable in scholarly writing. I do not allow the use of wikipedia, personal blogs, or “dot.com” sites. You must consult reputable, reliable, scholarly sources. You must choose a variety of sources. You cannot rely solely on internet sites. I require print sources as well. Please include the following:
*At least two books (print )
*At least two essays from a scholarly journal
*Six other sources of your choosing (they must adhere to the above guidelines, however)
You also need to read chapter five ( pgs. 123-135) for instruction on exactly how each type of source must be listed on your works cited page. Every detail, every piece of punctuation must be exact! Since this assignment is “practice” and you have not yet “cited” anything, you will title your bibliography: Working Bibliography. The structure/detail/documentation rules are the same as the works cited page; only the title is different.
Once you have done your research and decided on at least ten sources you plan to cite within your paper, please structure them in proper MLA bibliographic format and submit a Working Bibliography into the assignment box.
*Please note, you may use as many sources as you like as long as you have a minimum of ten. If your paper deals with one particular piece of literature, then that work is considered your PRIMARY source (for instance, if you are writing about “The Masque of the Red Death,” then you must include a volume of Poe’s works on your bibliography with Poe named as author). Your primary source must be listed on your bibliography in addition to the ten SECONDARY sources. So, for those of you focusing on a specific book, short story, etc…your bibliography must include at least ELEVEN entries: one primary source and ten secondary sources.
If you have any questions about the validity of a particular source, please call or email me anytime! I wish I could go over the research process with you in person in a REAL classroom, but since we don’t have that option I want you to know I am willing to help you in any ways I can!
Don’t forget you have access to “interlibrary loan” from any library in the United States. This means, if you find the title of a book which sounds as if it may be perfect for your paper but cannot find it on the shelf, you may “order” it free of charge through interlibrary loan. The library will find a copy of the book from another library (anywhere in the usa) and borrow it for you to use. Please take advantage of this free service! I don’t want you to have to purchase anything in order to write your paper.
**CAREFULLY EXAMINE THE TOP OF PAGE 131 FOR AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY MUST BE FORMATTED. NOTICE EVERY LINE OTHER THAN THE FIRST LINE OF EACH ENTRY MUST BE INDENTED FIVE SPACES; NOTICE ALL ENTRIES MUST BE LISTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER BY THE AUTHOR’S LAST NAME
